A bill splitting calculator you type into

Four people, one receipt, and somebody had the steak. Write each line of the bill, put @names after what each person had, and type split. Ratio shows who owes what, and works it out again when you fix a price.

Three rules cover it:

• Names after an amount mean that line is theirs. @Ana @Maria after the wine splits it between the two of them.
• A line with no names is shared by everyone named in that block, so the water and bread is €2 each.
• split shows everyone's share on one line. Copying it gives one person per line, ready for a group chat.

One person's share, with a tip

Start a line with a name to see only that person's share. It's an ordinary number, so you can add a tip or round it.

A weekend trip

The same works for anything a group pays for together: a cabin, fuel, tickets. Shared costs get everyone's name, the rest only the people who had them.

A blank line or a heading starts a new block. split still adds up every block above it, so the last line of the sheet is what each person owes for the whole trip. A line with no names is shared only by the people named in its own block, so name everyone in each block.

Questions

How do I split a bill unevenly? Put the names of the people who had each item after its price, like "Wine" 30 @Ana @Maria. Lines without names are shared by everyone named in the block. Type split to see each person's total.

Can I add a tip to one person's share? Yes. @Ion + 10% shows Ion's share with 10% on top. A share is an ordinary number, so you can also round it or convert it to another currency.

Does it work with several currencies? Yes. Write each amount in the currency it was paid in. Ratio converts them at live rates for 160+ currencies and gives each person's share in one currency.

Is Ratio a replacement for Splitwise? Not quite. Ratio is a calculator on your own computer: it works out who owes what, with no accounts and nothing sent anywhere. It doesn't track payments between people over time. Copy the split line into your group chat instead.

Does bill splitting work on Windows and Linux? Yes. Ratio uses the same calculation engine on Mac, Windows and Linux, so the same sheet gives the same shares on all three.
