# A bill splitting calculator you type into Written 23 October 2026 by Ratio. Every example was run through Ratio that day. Four people, one receipt, and somebody had the steak. Write each line of the bill, put `@names` after what each person had, and type `split`. Ratio shows who owes what, and works it out again when you fix a price. ## A dinner, split by who had what | # Dinner at Luca | | | --- | --- | | "Pizza" 14 eur @Ana | €14 | | "Risotto" 16 eur @Ion | €16 | | "Steak" 24 eur @Maria | €24 | | "Wine" 30 eur @Ana @Maria | €30 | | "Water and bread" 6 eur | €6 | | sum | €90 | | split | Ana €31 · Ion €18 · Maria €41 | Three rules cover it: - Names after an amount mean that line is theirs. `@Ana @Maria` after the wine splits it between the two of them. - A line with no names is shared by everyone named in that block, so the water and bread is €2 each. - `split` shows everyone's share on one line. Copying it gives one person per line, ready for a group chat. ## One person's share, with a tip Start a line with a name to see only that person's share. It's an ordinary number, so you can add a tip or round it. | "Pizza" 12.50 @Ana | 12.5 | | --- | --- | | "Wine" 20 @Ana @Ion | 20 | | "Bread" 3 | 3 | | @Ana | 24 | | @Ion + 10% | 12.65 | | Ion pays: @Ion | 11.5 | ## A weekend trip The same works for anything a group pays for together: a cabin, fuel, tickets. Shared costs get everyone's name, the rest only the people who had them. | # Weekend in Brașov | | | --- | --- | | "Fuel" 60 @Ana | 60 | | "Cabin, two nights" 240 @Ana @Ion @Dan | 240 | | "Groceries" 45 | 45 | | "Tickets" 3 * 18 @Ion @Dan | 54 | | "Lunch" 72 | 72 | | "Museum" 2 * 12 @Dan @Ion | 24 | | "Taxi" 18 @Ana @Dan | 18 | | sum | 513 | | split | Ana 188 · Ion 158 · Dan 167 | A blank line or a heading starts a new block. `split` still adds up every block above it, so the last line of the sheet is what each person owes for the whole trip. A line with no names is shared only by the people named in its own block, so name everyone in each block. ## Different currencies Paid the hotel in euros and dinner in dollars? Each share is converted at live rates for 160+ currencies. | "Hotel" 200 eur @Ana @Ion | €200 | | --- | --- | | "Dinner" 60 usd @Ion | $60 | | split | Ana €100 · Ion €153.60 | The dollar result changes with the market. `split` also works in Romanian (`împarte`), German (`aufteilen`), French (`partager`), Spanish (`dividir`), Italian (`dividi`), Japanese (`割り勘`), Chinese (`分摊`) and Korean (`더치페이`). Lines without names are shared by everyone named in the block. Type `split` to see each person's total. **Can I add a tip to one person's share?** Yes. `@Ion + 10%` shows Ion's share with 10% on top. A share is an ordinary number, so you can also round it or convert it to another currency. **Does it work with several currencies?** Yes. Write each amount in the currency it was paid in. Ratio converts them at live rates for 160+ currencies and gives each person's share in one currency. **Is Ratio a replacement for Splitwise?** Not quite. Ratio is a calculator on your own computer: it works out who owes what, with no accounts and nothing sent anywhere. It doesn't track payments between people over time. Copy the `split` line into your group chat instead. **Does bill splitting work on Windows and Linux?** Yes. Ratio uses the same calculation engine on Mac, Windows and Linux, so the same sheet gives the same shares on all three. Source: https://useratio.app/bill-splitting-calculator
