# Ratio: full reference > Ratio is a notepad calculator for Mac, Windows and Linux. You type calculations as plain text and the answer appears next to each line as you type. It handles live currencies and crypto, units, dates and time zones. This file holds the whole site in one place; the short summary is at https://useratio.app/llms.txt. ## Facts - Website: https://useratio.app/ - Made by: Adrian Viziteu - Download (free 7-day trial): Mac https://useratio.app/download/Ratio.dmg · Windows https://useratio.app/download/Ratio-Setup.exe · Linux https://useratio.app/download/Ratio.AppImage or https://useratio.app/download/Ratio.deb - Platforms: Mac (macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple silicon or Intel), Windows (10 and 11, 64-bit) and Linux (64-bit; Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, Debian, Fedora and others; AppImage or .deb). No iPhone, iPad or Android version. - Same calculation engine on all three, so every line gives the same answer everywhere. - Price: one-time purchase, no subscription, updates included. 1 computer $9.99, 2 computers $14.99 ($7.50 each), 3 computers $19.99 ($6.66 each). A license can mix a Mac, a Windows PC and a Linux machine. Every license has every feature. - Free trial: 7 days on each platform. After that Ratio asks for a license before calculating further; sheets stay on the computer and nothing is deleted. - Languages: English, Romanian, German, French, Spanish, Italian. Both the app and the calculation syntax. - Privacy: no accounts, no tracking, sheets stay on the computer (or in the user's own iCloud Drive if sync is on, Mac only). - Contact: hello@useratio.app ## What it does Ratio is for the everyday maths people do in a note: splitting a bill, converting a price, counting days to a deadline, working out VAT on an invoice. You type calculations as plain text, like "dinner 84 eur / 3", and the result appears next to each line as you type. **Does Ratio run on Windows and Linux?** Yes. Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), installed with Ratio-Setup.exe, and 64-bit Linux (Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, Debian, Fedora and others) as an AppImage or a .deb. It uses the same calculation engine as the Mac app. iCloud sync, sharing, version history, import/export, Liquid Glass and the Terminal command are Mac only for now. **Which Macs does Ratio run on?** Any Mac with macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple silicon or Intel. **Is there a Soulver for Windows or Linux?** Soulver is Mac, iPhone and iPad only. Ratio works the same way (plain-text lines, answers as you type, Soulver-style syntax) and runs on Windows and Linux, so Soulver users who also work on a PC can keep calculating the same way. **Does Ratio work offline?** Yes. All calculations run on the computer. Exchange rates need a connection to refresh; offline, Ratio uses the last rates it downloaded. **Can I sync sheets between Macs?** On the Mac, yes. Turn on iCloud sync in settings; sheets live in iCloud Drive › Ratio on every Mac. Windows and Linux keep sheets on the computer for now. **Can I use Ratio from the Terminal?** On the Mac, yes. `ratio "5 km in mi"` gives the same answer as the app. **Do I pay only once?** Yes. One payment, updates included. **What happens after the free trial?** After 7 days Ratio asks for a license before calculating anything else. Sheets stay on the computer and are all there after activation. **Where do exchange rates come from?** Ratio downloads them by itself while it runs: every hour on the Mac (and when it wakes up), every few hours on Windows and Linux. **How do I move a license to another computer?** In the app open Ratio Pro, click "Deactivate this Mac" (or "Deactivate this PC" on Windows and Linux), then enter the same key on the new computer. It can be a Mac, a PC or a Linux machine. ## Syntax and examples Full page: https://useratio.app/docs. Results from Ratio 0.6 on 15 October 2026, 1,234.5 number style, Germany's 19% VAT and holidays. Full page: https://useratio.app/what-is-a-notepad-calculator A notepad calculator (also called a text calculator or natural-language calculator) is a text editor that calculates. You write each step as a line, in plain words, and the answer appears beside the line as you type. Lines stay editable and can be named and referenced, so changing one number updates everything below it. A keypad calculator shows one number at a time and loses the steps; a spreadsheet keeps the steps but in cells and formulas that need setting up. Notepad calculators suit short calculations with a few connected steps: budgets, quotes and invoices, splitting bills, currencies, unit conversions and deadlines. Known apps: Soulver (Mac, iPhone, iPad), Numi (Mac, Windows, Linux), Calca (Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows) and Ratio (Mac, Windows, Linux). ## Notepad calculators compared Compared in October 2026 by the maker of Ratio; details for the others from their own sites. A 2- or 3-computer license can mix a Mac, a Windows PC and a Linux machine; "Deactivate this PC" in Ratio Pro moves it. - 14 themes, light and dark mode, and your own font size, decimals and number style. - On Windows, new versions download by themselves and install when you restart Ratio. - iCloud sync, sharing, version history, import and export, Liquid Glass and the Terminal command stay on the Mac for now. - The website offers the right download for each computer, with new pages comparing Ratio with Soulver, Numi, SpeedCrunch and Qalculate. ### Ratio 0.7.0 (18 October 2026) - A quick setup the first time you open Ratio: language, theme, light or dark, country and VAT, number format, text size and decimals, and how the window behaves. Run it again any time from the Ratio menu › Setup Assistant. - Every theme now comes in a light and a dark version, and works with any mode and material: Solid, Frosted, Liquid Glass and Clear Glass. - Click an answer to copy it, with a short animation to show it's on the clipboard. The card that popped up over answers is gone. - The preview in Settings shows real answers, so you see your decimals and number format change as you pick them. - Ratio opens in a larger window the first time. - Fixed: on the newest macOS, clicking an answer could do nothing. ### Ratio 0.6.8 (18 October 2026) - Times on a day: “until friday 18:00” and “next monday 9:30”. Time ranges: “9am to 5pm” is 8 h, and a range past midnight runs into the next day. - “2 weeks ago”, “end of month”, “start of the year”, and “double 25”, “twice 25”, “half of 80”. - Names with several words: “salad guy = 12”, then “salad guy × 2”. - Next to hours, m is minutes: “1h 30m + 45m”. After a currency sign, m and bn are millions and billions: “$2.5m in eur”. - “1 jan - 1 dec” counts within one year. “sin(90)” is in radians and now shows how to write degrees: sin(90°). - A simpler Share menu: the copies you use most on top, files and the rest under Export. - Fixed: “VAT in prev” works again, and multiplying a date no longer shows a nonsense number. - Windows and Linux: a Share button with Copy as Image, Copy Link and Export, plus keyboard shortcuts. ### Ratio 0.6.7 (18 October 2026) - A new Settings page, in the style of System Settings: a live preview of your sheet at the top, themes as colour dots, and Mode and Material as pictures. - Fixed: switching from Liquid Glass to Frosted no longer leaves the window's content at its old size. - New versions show up the same day: Ratio now looks for updates when it opens and when you come back to it, not just once a day. ### Ratio 0.6.6 () - New in Share: Copy Image with Background puts your sheet in a Ratio window on a landscape, sized to post on X and elsewhere. Save Image with Background… saves it as a PNG. ### Ratio 0.6.5 () - Fixed: “1210 sin IVA” (Spanish for without VAT) is no longer read as the sine function. - Fixed: “2500 eur + VAT in usd” now adds the VAT and then converts to dollars, instead of treating “VAT in usd” as a tax calculation. ### Ratio 0.6.4 () - Faster: results update up to 7× sooner as you type, most noticeable on long sheets and lines with dates or time zones. - “tax = subtotal * 19%” now keeps the amount, so “subtotal + tax” adds up right on the next line. “VAT = 9%” still sets the rate. - Hours times a price is money: “12 h x 65 usd” shows $780. - When a new version is ready, a button in the title bar offers to install it. ### Ratio 0.6.3 () - Loans and working days now work in plain words in Romanian, German and French: “împrumut 300k la 6% pentru 25 ani”, “Kredit 200k bei 5% für 30 Jahre”, “prêt 200k à 5% sur 30 ans”, “zile lucrătoare între 1 dec și 31 dec”. - “noon” and “midnight” work as times: “noon UTC in Los Angeles”. French “jusqu'à Noël” counts down like “until Christmas”. - “5 km in foo” and matrices like “det([[1,2],[3,4]])” now show nothing instead of a wrong answer. - Imperial units in German and French: “5 km in Meilen”, “100 kg in pfund”. `average(…)` works like `mean`. - In Terminal, `ratio --region FR` now uses France's VAT rate instead of the rate saved in the app. ### Ratio 0.6.2 () - With the Liquid Glass look, the window keeps its theme color when you switch to another app instead of turning pale. ### Ratio 0.5 (15 October 2026) - A friendlier installer window: drag Ratio into Applications. ### Ratio 0.4 (15 October 2026) - Weekdays (“next friday”), “in 10 days” and whole days until a date. - Lowercase units work everywhere: “gb”, “mb”, “f in c”. - Fixed a crash on first launch. ### Ratio 0.3 (14 October 2026) - Automatic updates: Ratio now offers new versions by itself. - A Help menu with a direct line to hello@useratio.app. ### Ratio 0.2 (14 October 2026) - A 7-day free trial and new prices: one payment of $9.99, $14.99 or $19.99 for 1, 2 or 3 Macs. ### Ratio 0.1 (14 October 2026) - First public version, notarized by Apple. - Live currencies and crypto, 150+ units, dates and time zones. - Finance, study and developer helpers; export as text or Markdown. - The `ratio` command for Terminal and a Raycast extension. ## Pages - [Home](https://useratio.app/): features, pricing, FAQ - [Syntax and examples](https://useratio.app/docs) - [Changelog](https://useratio.app/changelog) - [Ratio vs Soulver](https://useratio.app/ratio-vs-soulver) - [Ratio vs Numi](https://useratio.app/ratio-vs-numi) - [Ratio vs Calca](https://useratio.app/ratio-vs-calca): currencies, dates, platforms and maths compared - [Ratio vs PCalc](https://useratio.app/ratio-vs-pcalc): notepad calculator vs keypad calculator - [Ratio vs a spreadsheet](https://useratio.app/ratio-vs-spreadsheet): when to use Ratio instead of Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets - [Notepad calculator for Windows](https://useratio.app/notepad-calculator-windows): Ratio on Windows 10 and 11 - [Notepad calculator for Linux](https://useratio.app/notepad-calculator-linux): Ratio as an AppImage or .deb - [Soulver alternative for Windows and Linux](https://useratio.app/soulver-alternative-windows): Soulver-style calculating on a PC - [Numi alternative](https://useratio.app/numi-alternative): Ratio for Numi users on Mac, Windows and Linux - [SpeedCrunch and Qalculate alternative](https://useratio.app/speedcrunch-alternative): a notepad calculator for Linux and Windows - [Currency converter for Mac, Windows and Linux](https://useratio.app/currency-converter): converting currencies and crypto, with examples - [VAT calculator for Mac, Windows and Linux](https://useratio.app/vat-calculator): adding and removing VAT, sales tax, margins - [Time zone calculator for Mac, Windows and Linux](https://useratio.app/time-zone-calculator): converting times between cities, countdowns - [Loan calculator for Mac, Windows and Linux](https://useratio.app/loan-calculator): loan payments, total interest, pmt/npv/irr - [Percentage calculator](https://useratio.app/percentage-calculator): percent of a number, percentage change, discounts, tips, margins - [Unit converter](https://useratio.app/unit-converter): length, temperature, cooking, speed, area and data sizes, with examples - [Working days calculator](https://useratio.app/working-days-calculator): business days between dates and deadlines, with public holidays - [Invoice calculator for freelancers](https://useratio.app/invoice-calculator): hours times rate, discounts, VAT and the client's currency - [What is a notepad calculator?](https://useratio.app/what-is-a-notepad-calculator): the kind of app, how it differs from keypad calculators and spreadsheets - [The best notepad calculators compared](https://useratio.app/best-notepad-calculator): Ratio, Soulver, Numi and Calca side by side - [Glossary](https://useratio.app/glossary): 34 terms (VAT, margin, PMT, NPV, working days, hex, chmod and more) explained with the line to type into Ratio - [Money back for posting](https://useratio.app/back): post a short video about Ratio and get 50% or 100% of the price back at 5,000 or 20,000 views - Every page has a Markdown copy: add .md to its address, for example https://useratio.app/vat-calculator.md - [Română](https://useratio.app/ro), [Deutsch](https://useratio.app/de), [Français](https://useratio.app/fr), [Español](https://useratio.app/es), [Italiano](https://useratio.app/it): the same overview in Romanian, German, French, Spanish and Italian - [Privacy](https://useratio.app/privacy) - [Terms](https://useratio.app/terms)
