# An invoice calculator for freelancers

Written 18 October 2026 by Adrian Viziteu. Every example was run through Ratio 0.6.4 that day, with Germany's 19% VAT. Currency results change with the market.

Before an invoice goes into your accounting tool, you work it out somewhere. Hours times rate. A discount. VAT. Maybe the client's currency. In Ratio, all of it stays on one page, with names, so you can change the rate and watch every line update.

Change `rate` to 70 and every line below follows. The words before the `=` are names you choose.

## Rates for other countries

VAT uses the region in Settings. Write the rate yourself for a client elsewhere, or use the local name of the tax.

## Questions

**Can Ratio make the invoice document?** No. Ratio is a calculator: it works out the numbers, which you then copy into your invoicing or accounting tool, or export as text or Markdown on the Mac.

**How do I add VAT to an invoice total?** Write `net + VAT` for your region's rate, or `net + VAT 9%` for another rate. `VAT in gross` shows the tax on its own.

**Can I show the total in my client's currency?** Yes. Add a line like `gross in usd`. Ratio uses live rates for 160+ currencies, refreshed while you're online.
